Day 2
Sunday, July 3, 2011

Arrival in Delhi

Late this evening, arrive in Delhi, an intriguing blend of history and modernity. Home to more than 1,000 monuments, Delhi also boasts an ever-growing commercial and industrial core, which began in the mid-1980s as foreign companies spilled in and set up shop. New Delhi’s art galleries and hotel discos are just as attractive as Old Delhi’s haphazard streets and traditional bazaars. Meet your tour director, who will remain with you throughout your stay, and then transfer to your hotel.

Day 3
Monday, July 4

Guided sightseeing of New Delhi

This morning a local guide shows you New Delhi. Stroll the Rajpath a two-mile avenue with fountains, canals, monuments, and museum. You’ll also see the India Gate, the country’s national monument, and Rshtrapati Bhavan, the residence of India’s head of state. Experience the busy shopping complex Connaught Place for lunch and window-shopping.

This afternoon explore the history and religious diversity of Delhi through historic and modern day sites. Visit Mughal Emperor Humayun’s Tomb, said to be the predecessor to the Taj Mahal. The stunning white-marble domed, red sandstone burial structure is surrounded by the hallmark symmetrical gardens of Mughal architecture.  Walk the grounds of the Qutb Complex where the foundation of the Delhi Sultanate was established in 1193.  The mosque and other buildings are a fusion of Hindu panels re-purposed from razed temples for the Islamic domes, walls, and arches.  The modern lotus domed Baha’i House of Worship is stunning with its white marble 27-peteled iconic flower dominating the landscape. Experience a 15-minute service in the lofty auditorium and learn more about this faith tradition.

In the evening, shopping in Dilli Haat, a lively outdoor market will complete your day.
